It's just 100 plate appearances, but the first-round pick rolled out a .440/.530/.667 slash with more walks (19) than strikeouts (12). He's working on sticking at third base, but the bat was monstrous in the Cal League to get his feet wet for a High-A assignment next spring.

The billing was earned before he signed. Reese hit .352/.422/.718 with 21 home runs at Mississippi State as a sophomore, then .336/.432/.721 with 24 as a junior, raising his walk rate from 9.9% to 14.0% in the process. That is a 144 wRC+ in the SEC against a strikeout rate of 21.6%.

Then a professional debut that somehow improved on it: .440/.530/.667 in 21 games and 100 plate appearances, a 195 wRC+, three home runs, and an 8.3% swinging-strike rate.

The number that should not happen is the strikeout rate. It fell from 21.6% in college to 12.0% in pro ball. Players almost never get harder to strike out when they leave school, and he walked 19 times against 12 strikeouts — more free passes than punchouts in his first month as a professional.

The game log fills in what the rate stats can't. Reese reached base in 19 of his 21 games, and only twice all month did he finish a day without a hit or a walk. He opened his career with an 11-game on-base streak, from August 6 through August 22\. Eleven of the 21 games were multi-hit, five of them three-hit, and 15 of 21 included either multiple hits or multiple walks. He went without a strikeout in 11 games and struck out more than once in only two.

There was also no fade as the league saw him. He hit .485 across his first 10 games and .405 across his last 11, with the walk and strikeout totals nearly identical in each half — nine walks and six strikeouts, then 10 and six.

The caveat is the honest one and it is only about volume: this is 100 plate appearances against pitchers who had never seen him, in a league he was old for. Nothing in it is a warning. There just isn't much of it yet.
