Ford's debut was cut short due to injury, but he'd already piped four bombs in 13 games. He'll have to manage the whiff in his game, but he will walk and hit homers, and we know that plays. Where the ability to hit for some average and get on base lands is the watch-worthy element moving forward.

The college record is the substantial part of the file: 48 home runs in 794 plate appearances across three seasons and two schools, at Virginia and then Tennessee. That is a homer every 16.5 trips, sustained over a full career rather than flashed in a good spring. His professional rate was actually better — four in 56 plate appearances, one every 14 — which is the kind of thing that means little at that sample size except that nothing about the power looked out of place.

The whiff you flag has a trajectory worth tracking. His strikeout rate was 18.2% as a freshman, then 13.0% as a sophomore, then 19.9% after transferring to Tennessee, then 28.6% in his 13 professional games. That is a line moving in one direction, and it is the number that will decide how much of the power plays.

Two things in the pro sample argue the other way. His walk rate went up, not down — 12.5% against a college career that never exceeded 10.0% — and he reached base in 12 of his 13 games.

There is also an oddity in how the damage arrived. Ford collected 12 hits and four extra-base hits, and all four were home runs. No doubles, no triples. It was over the fence or it was a single, which fits with a pull rate of just 32.3% — the lowest of anyone in this year's top 20\. That combination, low pull rate and over-the-fence power, usually describes a hitter with real strength rather than one living off one swing plane.

On usage, the organization gave him eight games in right field and four at third base before the season ended on August 21.

All of the above rests on 56 plate appearances. The college file is the evidence; this is the sample.
