Griffin Hugus — Mariners Prospect Profile
Mariners right-hander, No. 20 in the September 2026 rankings. Scouting reports, development notes and start-by-start analysis from Jason A. Churchill.
Hugus missed all of 2026 recovering from UCL surgery, but was among the more intriguing arms added in the 2025 Draft. There's arm strength, multiple breaking balls, and a changeup on which to build. There's a chance at a mid-rotation starter here, but admittedly the road is a bit long after surgery and a lot can happen, including in terms of a timeline.
The 2025 season at Miami is the only version of Hugus on record, and it is a starter's record. He made 17 starts, threw 93 innings, struck out 95 and walked 35, and put 64.1% of his 1,553 pitches in the strike zone. He finished two of those starts himself — eight innings at North Carolina on March 28, then a nine-inning complete game against Columbia on May 31 that took 123 pitches.
He was not handled carefully. Six of his 17 starts reached 100 pitches. He averaged 91 a night and 5.5 innings, reached seven innings three times, and had four games of nine or more strikeouts, including 11 in his season opener against Niagara.

The shape of the season is the part worth recording. Across his first nine starts Hugus struck out 27.7% of the batters he faced against an 8.0% walk rate — a 19.7% strikeout-minus-walk rate. Across his final eight he struck out 19.3% and walked 9.6%, cutting that figure to 9.6%. It halved.
His strike rate barely moved across the same span, 64.5% to 63.7%, which is what makes the strikeout decline notable. He was still throwing the ball over the plate. Hitters simply stopped missing it. Three of his last six starts produced one strikeout apiece.
Everything on his page was compiled in that one college season. There is no 2026 line to set beside it and no professional sample at all, so the 17 starts above are the entire statistical record of the pitcher — and they are now sixteen months old.
