When Jerry Dipoto took over the baseball operations department prior to the 2016 season, he did not have "one job." He has several, and while one of them – rebuilding the organization – was going to have to wait a few years, part of that process – drafting and developing well, was an immediate focus.

As the club was heading toward a rebuild in 2018, the club's draft results shifted toward starting pitching for a few years. Not necessarily by design in Round 1, but the classes played out that way for the Mariners when they selected Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, and Emerson Hancock in the first round three straight years.

But the club's biggest victories in starting pitching development are actually a trio of arms that couldn't crack the top 3 rounds in their draft classes.
